Mamoli Mission, Mozambique

Mamoli Mission, an orphanage that Mercy Air partners with in southern Mozambique, is located about two kilometers from a picturesque, yet almost completely deserted beach. Despite the draw of the warm Indian Ocean, this part of Mozambique is still very rural and there is seldom any traffic on the bumpy, dusty road that passes by the mission to the more populated areas of Mozambique.
Until a year ago, this orphanage, which is home to up to fifty children, subsidised its expenses through a small bakery that produced a fresh batch of hot Portuguese rolls every morning. The small bakery provided food for the mission’s staff and children while also providing additional income through selling rolls to the locals and the occasional tourist vehicle passing by on its way to Maputo.

However, all of this changed last year when the bakery’s oven irreparably collapsed, and it was no longer a source of food or income for the orphanage. When Mercy Air helicopter pilot and mechanic Joel and Michi learned of this, they quickly organised the purchase and delivery of a replacement oven from South Africa through Mercy Air. Director of Mamoli Mission, Simao, is extremely grateful for the positive effect the new oven has already had on the mission and even hopes to be able to make use of a second oven in the future! Now, not only the kids and Mamoli Mission staff, but also tourists, pilots, and nurses alike enjoy the fresh bread coming from this little oven each morning.

Thank you.

Joel and Michi.
